Salads are not as easy as you think they would be on a Low Sodium diet. The salads themselves are fairly low sodium if you avoid ingredients that are higher in salt like olives, cheese, deli meats, croutons, and yes, certain dressings. Dressings, especially the store bought bottled kinds are usually the culprits that put the sodium count of your salads off the charts. I’ve found a brand of low sodium Vinaigrettes that fit our needs. So here is my review of Bragg’s Low Sodium Vinaigrette Dressings.
Bragg’s offers six different Vinaigrettes; Vinaigrette, Fat Free Vinaigrette, Hawaiian, Ginger & Sesame, BraggBerry (Blueberry, Raspberry, Acai, Goji, & Grape), and Pomegranate. I was not able to try the Pomegranate, as Heart Transplant patients should not have pomegranate juice as it interferes with many of our transplant medications. All of the dressings start with a base of their Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and an Organic Extra Virgin Olive oil. Then they mix in different spices and Herbs to achieve the flavor profile.
Not all of their dressings are sodium free. In fact the Ginger & Sesame is 170 mg for a 2 Tbsp serving. The Regular Vinaigrette is 60 mg per 2 Tbsp, the Pomegranate is 10 mg per 2 Tbsp and all the rest are 0mg. Both the Regular and the Fat Free Vinaigrette are similar to Italian or Greek flavor profiles – Lemon and Garlic notes with some black pepper. They are a tiny bit sweet with the cider vinegar as opposed to the full on taste of a white vinegar.
They all are great for marinading as well. In fact the BraggBerry on pork chops is a very fun flavor profile. Bragg’s is known for their Nutritional Yeast which makes a great sodium free seasoning for vegetables or popcorn. They also offer their liquid aminos as a substitute for low sodium soy sauce, but the sodium amount is still too high for my daily limits.
