Can I Eat Low Sodium at In-N-Out Burger?
In-N-Out is hamburger infamy! They have a huge cult following even though they have limited locations and area. They are legendary for having both “secret” and “not so secret” menu items. So my question was do they have a low sodium menu? Sadly, they don’t have a secret low sodium menu, but here is the guide to what and how to order to stay low sodium at In-N-Out Burger.
Secret Menu = So Much Sodium
Like most fast food restaurants, the basics are where you will find items that are low enough (hopefully). In-N-Out is known for having some secret burgers that people “in the know” could order up. They have names like Animal Style, which is a burger of your choice with hand-leafed lettuce, tomato, a mustard cooked beef patty; add pickle, extra spread with grilled onions.Or there is a Triple-Triple or Quad-Quad, which is just like it sounds, you are multiplying the amount of meat patties.
The one secret menu style we are interested in is to order your In-N-Out burger as “Protein Style”. Which means you will get your hamburger wrapped in hand-leafed lettuce instead of a bun. The bun alone is over half of the sodium of their hamburger. You cut out the bun, you remove over 400 mg of sodium. You will also need to skip the cheese. This is very similar to how we can order a burger and stay low sodium at Five Guys too.
What Can We Eat And Stay Low Sodium At In-N-Out Burger
Let’s define what we are looking for. The USDA recommends a totally healthy person consume no more than 2300 mg of sodium per day. The American Heart Association (AHA) and the Mayo Clinic recommends no more than 1500 mg per day for anyone with: high blood pressure, is a woman, is a person of color, is over the age of 50, or who has a heart issue. So basically most of the US population qualifies for the 1500 mg limit. To that end we need to figure out a meal that runs 500-700 mg or approximately 1/3 of our daily limit. I used the In-N-Out Burger Nutrition Menu to figure this out.
Hamburger & Fries
So you will want to order a “Hamburger with onions and spread.” Spread is their secret sauce, similar to Big Mac Sauce from McDonald’s.If you order it like that, it is 370 mg. If you get it with ketchup and mustard instead of their spread, it is 720 mg. I am not sure if you can help numbers a bit by requesting “No Seasoning”. It never hurts to try. Their fries are listed only as one size, and the sodium for an order is 245 mg. I have not been able to confirm if they can make unsalted fries, or if the fries are already pre-seasoned. Again, it wouldn’t hurt to try to ask. If you know the answer, please share it below in the comments.
Shakes
The Strawberry shake is the lowest of the three flavors. It is 270 mg. The Vanilla is 300 mg, and the Chocolate is 320 mg.
Have you been to an In-N-Out? Let us know how it went when you ordered low sodium!
Since their food is fresh and never frozen – nothing comes pre-seasoned. You can get meat and fries no salt. I’ve literally sat there and watched them cut up potatoes to use for my fries.
Great info, thanks!
Yes I get unsalted fries all the time. They handout the potatoes everyday so nothing is prepared or pre-seasoned. I also get my burger patty unsalted and protein style. Love them…
Sorry handcut not handout…lol
Good to know!
Thank you for the tips. I love In N Out and it is a constant ritual when I visit California, heading to In N Out before family and friends. I have been ordering burgers with lettuce wrap, which just alarmed my friends when I post it on Facebook. It is one of the healthiest burgers.
You are welcome!
My cardiologist team recommended in n out burger. I order burger & fries no salt. No problem here in Az.
