Can I Eat Low Sodium At Boston Market

Can I Eat Low Sodium At Boston Market

I used to think that Boston Market was basically a “healthier” version of KFC. That was before I went low sodium and really started digging into nutrition labels and counting up sodium. Then I took a look at the menu with new eyes and saw all of the heavy sauces, macaroni and cheese, and brined chicken. So then I really combed deeper into the menu to see if I could find out what we can eat and stay low sodium at Boston Market.

Is Low Sodium Comfort Food Possible?

The quick answer, is yes. Although it requires you to cook it from scratch at home. I have hacked the salt out of many recipes for comfort dishes. I have several in my cookbook or here on the blog. I even have recipes for low sodium items similar to what you would find on the Boston Market Menu, like turkey, meatloaf, macaroni and cheese, and bbq pork.

Let’s face it though. We don’t always have the time to cook at home. Sometimes we are out and about with friends and want to grab a bite to eat. So if the choice is Boston Market, then you will be happy to know there are some choices we can make to enjoy a low sodium meal!

What Are We Looking For To Be Low Sodium?

Let’s clarify what we are looking for when we talk about making a meal. We want one entree, side, and beverage. It should equate to 1/3 of our daily sodium allotment. We don’t want to have to resort to ordering something strictly from the kids menu either. You should be able to eat with dignity and not feel denied or shamed.

The FDA recommends 2300 mg of sodium for a person with a healthy heart and no high blood pressure. The American Heart Association (AHA) and the Mayo Clinic recommend only 1500 mg for anyone with a heart issue or high blood pressure. I personally am allowed 1500 mg per day.

We found the information for this list from the Boston Market Nutrition Guide. Sadly, right off the bat, you should know their Macaroni and Cheese is 1200 mg. Yikes!
