Low sodium tacos are a staple of my low sodium life. There are many ways to cut the sodium out of the ingredients, that with a few wise choices, they can be part of yours as well. I have put together the ultimate low sodium taco guide, to share a list of all of the components, but today we are talking about the seasonings and spices to use on the fillings.
Store-bought vs. Home-made?
If you prefer to make your own spice mixes, then I have the best sodium free recipe for sodium free taco seasoning. When I first went low sodium though, I was still using those seasoning packets found at the store. Once I started reading labels, I was shocked to see how much sodium was in that packet.
There are many brands that claim to have “lower” or “reduced” sodium, but what does that really mean? Many of the “original” packets contain between 450-700 mg of sodium. Taco Bell Reduced Sodium Taco seasoning is 220 mg per packet. Figuring you can get 6 tacos per lb of beef, divide by six for serving. Ortega 40% reduced sodium Taco Seasoning is 260 mg per packet. Old El Paso Reduced Sodium Taco Seasoning is 270 mg per packet.
There are two brands I have found that have zero sodium. Mrs. Dash Taco Seasoning has 0 mg of sodium. It does use Potassium Chloride as a salt replacement, so Most Heart and Kidney patients must avoid. Then there’s Dak’s Taco Knight Seasoning.
The Best Low Sodium Taco Seasoning
Taco Knight is Dak’s newest flavor of spice blends. It has zero sodium, no MSG, and is all natural. Most packaged taco seasonings are based on cayenne or red pepper. Dak’s also adds in Ancho Chilies which gives a more smokey and fire roasted flavor profile. I’ve used it now on eggs, mixed into sour cream, on chicken, and in tacos. I think this would be great to add into chili or beans or for soups and stews.
To make tacos, use 2 teaspoons per pound of meat. It makes a great rub for fish or pork chops.
I have also used Dak’s Blackened Seasoning for my low sodium blackened fish tacos. It’s awesome! If you ever order spices from the Dak’s website, don’t forget to enter the code HACKING SALT at checkout for a discount on your order and FREE shipping.
