Get My Low Sodium Cookbook
I have been low sodium since 2002. I love to pay it forward and share the recipes, tips, and tricks that I know how to do with all of you that read this blog. It is a passion, a lifestyle, and is what drives me to help people that find themselves faced with starting on a low sodium diet. That lead to my writing a low sodium cookbook.
When I first began my journey, my care providers were not much help. I never met with a nutritionist, who could explain what to do. Cardiologists and surgeons are extremely talented, but not necessarily experts on low sodium diets. There was a definite gap. I saw an opportunity to fill that gap, and it is how I came to write my first Low Sodium Cookbook.
How did I get on the path to write a low sodium cookbook?
The inspiration and impetus for me to start a blog came from an afternoon I spent in the hospital. My roommate, a truck driver, had just undergone heart bypass surgery. He was informed, post his surgery, that he would be placed on a low sodium diet. That was it. No guidance. No pamphlet. Nothing. He went to call in his meal order, and was getting denied on every food selection he was making. He was used to burgers and cokes. When he finally reached the bottom of the menu and ordered oatmeal, he was approved that choice. He hung up the phone and immediately started to cry.
I had noticed his dilemma and offered to help him navigate the menu for low sodium that would taste good. He originally wanted to order a pulled pork sandwich. I told him he could get the pork, but not as a sandwich. The bun and cheese were too much sodium. I asked him if he liked rice, which he did, so we ordered him a BBQ Pork Rice Bowl that he was very happy with. He asked if I could write up all of his grocery lists for him and help him with recipes.
That is how Hacking Salt was born!
The Journey from Blog to Cookbook
I never thought I would write a cookbook. I am not a professionally trained chef, but I am a foodie, grill-master, hobbyist, home cook, and low sodium practitioner. Basically, I know enough to be dangerous. My wife and I run a PR & Marketing firm: Sterling Cross Communications. It is there we work with healthcare professionals, chefs, restaurants, and many more businesses and companies. Those relationships allow me to research and get tips and advice to hack the salt out of recipes without losing taste.
I also wanted to provide a “get started” low sodium cookbook. One of the most popular blog posts I wrote is: How do I start a low sodium diet, and What can I eat on a low sodium diet. This cookbook takes those posts out to a whole new level. It covers the reasons for low sodium and how to get started. We also created meal plans and over 100 new recipes for you to try that are not on the blog. It is the kind of cookbook I wish I had received when I was first told to go on a low sodium diet.
